What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

A simple overview of what may happen before, during, and after a first therapy appointment.

Written byPrickly Pear Therapy

Starting therapy can bring a mix of relief, uncertainty, and practical questions. While every clinician and service is different, knowing the general shape of a first appointment can make the process feel more familiar.

Before the appointment

The practice may confirm scheduling, payment or insurance information, appointment format, and any forms that need to be completed. Share sensitive clinical information only through the secure process the practice provides.

What the first session may include

A first session usually includes time to talk about what brings you in, relevant background, current concerns, goals, and questions. You do not have to explain everything perfectly or share more than you are ready to discuss.

Therapy is collaborative

Your clinician may ask questions, explain how they work, and begin discussing possible goals or next steps. You can ask about the approach, privacy, communication, scheduling, or anything else that would help you understand the process.

Pay attention to fit

A useful therapeutic relationship should make room for questions, feedback, and your preferences. It can take time to feel comfortable, but you are allowed to talk openly about what is or is not working for you.

Your next step
